Languages on Lovora: What Works in Each, Measured

English, Italian, French, Spanish, German, Chinese (Simplified), Japanese and Arabic (right-to-left). The language is detected from the browser and can be changed from the language menu at any time.

• Interface: every screen, button and message of the app is translated into all eight.
• Her first message: each companion’s greeting is written in each language. Arabic greetings are written by hand rather than machine-translated.
• Chat: she answers in the language you write in, and follows if you switch.

• English, Italian, French, Spanish, German: fluent, natural replies.
• Chinese and Japanese: answered in the same language and script; written quality in these two has not been formally measured.
• Arabic: understood and answered in Arabic, but the weakest of the eight: expect an occasional grammatical error in her replies. The first message sets the language of a conversation, which is why Arabic greetings are hand-written — a conversation that opens in Arabic stays in Arabic far more reliably than one that opens in English.

Her voice is produced by a multilingual speech model. Quality was measured by generating sentences in her voice and transcribing them back with a speech recognizer: the share of words that come back different is the word error rate. Lower is better; 0% means every word was understood exactly.

In a voice call your speech is transcribed, answered and spoken back. Speech recognition works in all eight languages and takes well under a second; the spoken reply takes a few seconds. Call quality in each language follows the voice table above. Details in Voice notes and voice calls.

Overview pages exist in each language: Italiano, Français, Español, Deutsch, 中文, 日本語 and العربية. The legal documents (Terms, Privacy Policy, Acceptable Use Policy) are published in English, which is the binding version.

Prices, features, limits and content rules do not change with the language. The rules in the Acceptable Use Policy are enforced in all eight languages, and moderation understands requests made in any of them (see Safety and moderation).

• On a first visit the interface follows the browser’s language; if it is not one of the eight, English is used.
• A choice made in the language menu is remembered on that device and overrides the browser.
• Each conversation follows the language you write in, independently of the interface: you can use the app in English and chat in Italian.
• Arabic switches the whole interface to right-to-left layout.

• Mixing two languages inside one message can make her answer in either of them.
• Voice quality differs by language as measured in section 3; text quality does not follow the same order (written Arabic is the weakest, spoken Spanish is).
